Amal Clooney, international human rights law barrister and co-founder of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, alongside Philippa Webb, Professor of Public International Law at King’s College London and board member of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, will deliver a lecture on 15 May to an audience of academic staff, students and alumni of the Faculty of Law and St Hugh’s College.
In this special lecture “Waging Justice in an Age of Authoritarianism”, Amal Clooney and Philippa Webb will discuss their latest book, The Right to a Fair Trial in International Law (Oxford, 2021), and how the rule of law can protect fundamental freedoms including the right to free speech around the world. The lecture will take place at St Hugh’s College, of which Amal is an alumna.
Prior to the lecture, Law students and Faculty members will join Philippa and leading Law academics to discuss “The International Court of Justice as a Human Rights Body”. This discussion will focus on the increased (and perhaps unexpected) contribution of the International Court of Justice to human rights jurisprudence, including the right to a fair trial, self-determination and the prohibition of genocide and torture.
