Latest BBC news from LA

   Just saw this on the latest news on the BBC website, and thought of one little boy who is asthmatic...........tho not there at the moment...

PAN -Those fires are affecting the air quality all across the US because of the jet stream. We saw the effects here in NY earlier in the week. We're getting some rain so that should help a little. I don't know how the people out west are dealing with it. It's awful.

Well I really hope other regions in the US are safe. Apparently several of  the major fires have been started by the Pacific  Gas and Electrical company, who have now admitted that they haven't been maintaining the overhead lines which of course clash with trees unless maintained!

They are saying that they will now install underground cables ( which are everywhere in Europe) but who knows how long that will take.

Tragic and not great for global warming. Really surprised they haven't been up before Congress.

PAN - I honestly don't know that much about what they think started the fires. I know PG&E's practices have been blamed for problems before, but that's in California. I don't know about the other states - although I did see something about a couple being charged for starting one of the fires at a "reveal" party (with fireworks, I believe). Idiots!

At this point it doesn't really matter. They just have to figure out how to put the fires out and find a way to prevent them as much as possible in the future. The droughts in the southwest are making life out there unsustainable and the fires are part and parcel of the same problem.

I also don't know if Congress has done anything about the situation. I'm guessing they've left most of the policy decisions to the states and have only offered disaster relief. I'm not sure they legally have any other option. Maybe now, with the connection to climate change so obvious and a Democratic administration, they'll do something more substantive.
