George Clooney’s favourite TV series of all time: “Every episode was like ‘The Godfather'”

George Clooney is one of Hollywood’s most iconic leading men, known for his undeniable charm and dazzling screen presence that has captivated audiences around the world, working with directors such as Alfonso CuarĂ³n, the Coen brothers, Wes Anderson, Steven Soderbergh and Terrence Malick.

Throughout his long career, Clooney has diversified even further and established himself as a producer and director, receiving an Academy Award nomination for co-producing the 2012 political thriller Argo. However, when the actor was asked about what he watches in his own time, he gave a surprising answer.

Clooney revealed that he watches more television shows than films, saying, “There’s infinitely more good television than there is anything else. My favourite series I’ve ever seen is Narcos — every episode was like The Godfather“.

Narcos is an original show produced by Netflix that follows the work of a DEA agent as he tries to capture the leader of a Colombian drug cartel. The story is based on the real-life of narcoterrorist and drug lord Pablo Escobar, a man who became a billionaire by selling cocaine, with Wagner Moura and Pedro Pascal in the leading roles. Despite not winning in any major categories, the show was met with critical acclaim and nominated for Golden Globe and Emmy awards. It ended after three seasons with a short companion series called Narcos: Mexico, which ran for three seasons.
Clooney also sang the praises of another Netflix original show, saying, “My wife and I also watched The Crown. In Narcos, we see someone beating the shit out of somebody and killing their fucking dog, and then the next night, we’re watching The Crown, and when Prince Philip says to the Queen, ‘Maybe you should do that on your knees,’ we’re like, ‘Ooh dear.’ It’s unbelievable how quickly your sense of morals changes.”

The Crown has become one of Netflix’s most popular shows, winning over 20 Emmy awards and seven Golden Globes, launching the careers of many British actors such as Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin. The show documents the ins and outs of the royal family, with each season seeing a new actor in the role of each family member as it follows them throughout different time periods. It was perhaps one of Netflix’s most challenging productions, with a cast of over 200 people for each season and an extensive costume department to maintain its historical accuracy. The show recently ran for its final season, with over 2million viewers tuning into the first episode.

Despite his love for television (which can perhaps be traced back to his early role as Dr Doug Ross on ER), Clooney has only starred in a select few television shows. More recently, though, Clooney directed the 2023 war drama The Boys in the Boat starring Callum Turner and Joel Edgerton but is set to have his next on-screen appearance in Noah Baumbach’s next film, set to release in 2025. The plot details are being kept under lock and key, however it has been reported that Adam Sandler and Louis Partridge will also star in the film.
