George Clooney is back in front of (and behind) the camera for a new film heading to Netflix later this year. Titled The Midnight Sky, the postapocalyptic feature follows Clooney's Augustine as he tries to stop a crew of astronauts from returning to Earth, which is experiencing a major global disaster. Here's what you need to know of the upcoming space flick.

The Midnight Sky debuts in December.

There's no exact release date yet, but be on the lookout for an announcement closer to December. Like most new movies on Netflix, it'll probably drop on a Friday.

It's based on the book Good Morning, Midnight.

Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) adapted the screenplay from Lily Brooks-Dalton's acclaimed 2016 novel, Good Morning, Midnight. The book follows Augustine, an astronomer studying in remote locations, who stays behind with his work when everyone at his research post evacuates because of a dangerous threat. He learns that he is alone with a mysterious child named Iris. Meanwhile, mission specialist Sullivan and her crew of astronauts are returning from Jupiter, becoming the first humans to explore this deeply into space. But mission control has gone silent, and she and her team don't know how to get home.
"As Augustine and Sully each face an uncertain future against forbidding yet beautiful landscapes, their stories gradually intertwine in a profound and unexpected conclusion," part of the synopsis reads.

You'll recognize the names in the cast.

Clooney takes the lead as Augustine, and Felicity Jones (Rogue One, The Theory of Everything) is Sully. Joining them are Selma's David Oyelowo, Friday Night Lights' Kyle Chandler, and Tiffany Boone of Little Fires Everywhere and The Chi.

This isn't Clooney's first time in the director's chair.

His past directing credits include the Hulu series Catch-22 (2019), the dark comedy Suburbicon (2017), the World War II drama The Monuments Men (2014), the election thriller The Ides of March (2011), and the football comedy Leatherheads (2008).
