STAGE OF GLOBAL CONQUEST: The movie industry’s man for all seasons received rave reviews for his performance in The Descendants and earned respect, if not box-office dollars, for the political drama The Ides of March, which he wrote, directed, and starred in. Offscreen, he remains Hollywood’s political class president: he hosted the biggest Obama dinner of the year at his home. IDEOLOGICAL BONA FIDES: In March, he was handcuffed, along with his father, in front of the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, D.C., while protesting violence in Sudan.
