George Clooney got a blast from the past watching his new movie.
In Jay Kelly (in theaters now and on Netflix Dec. 5), the Oscar winner, 64, plays a famous movie star not unlike himself. Speaking to PEOPLE at the Noah Baumbach movie’s Nov. 11 Los Angeles premiere, it’s clear some of the parallels with his real life were less than comfortable.
The final scene of Jay Kelly — light spoilers follow — shows Clooney’s Jay and his manager (played by Adam Sandler) taking in a highlights reel of Jay’s past cinema work at a lifetime achievement ceremony. Baumbach used real footage from the actor’s many past screen projects, a move Clooney says he “didn't know they were going to do.”

The window shades in the house are drawn. The Clooneys just arrived yesterday. The house is right there, visible from the water and from the old man’s fishing spot: a large, elegant rectangle built in the eighteenth century with lovely tall windows, in the center of a small town, on the winding, narrow road that runs along the shore. On the small beach along the jetty, in the shadow of the house, two high school girls pick their way through damp seaweed, and they yelp when they dive into the cool morning water.
Clooney bought the house in the early 2000s with a plan he later abandoned. He had become pretty famous as an actor on ER, the pioneering prime-time hospital drama that pulled in more than thirty million viewers every Thursday while Clooney was on it, and he was on a motorcycle trip with some buddies to the Italian Alps. They stopped to have lunch with his friends Veronique and Gregory Peck, who were staying at the Villa d’Este, in Cernobbio. After lunch, Clooney’s bike broke down, and he knocked on the door of this house looking for a phone. The owner, a Mr. Heinz, of the ketchup Heinzes, was sitting by the pool eating pizza, alone. They talked, and by the end of the afternoon he asked Clooney if he wanted to buy the house.
Ridiculous, Clooney said. He didn’t have that kind of money.

A few weeks later, the man lowered the price. This time, Clooney said what the hell—he bought it. He had never even been inside. He figured he’d have fun there for a year, then sell it at a profit. Next thing he knows, there he is sitting by the pool, alone, at his house in Italy. He was always in such a hurry to be a success that he’d been eating dinner standing up for as long as he could remember. And then these guys—not much money, doing hard labor all day, and they’re celebrating another night walking home.

Now, outside that same window, the old fisherman reels in his line and casts out again as the morning sun warms the lake. A new day begins.

A few more steps down the stucco wall that borders the road alongside Clooney’s house is an automobile entrance, with an automatic sliding gate and a modest security office. It’s all tasteful, sun-dappled wrought iron and gravel, no ostentatious show of celebrity to disrupt the ancient neighborhood. A man in a uniform escorts me through the gate and down to the sloping yard, and Clooney appears from behind a hedge, smiling, wearing sunglasses. His teeth are enviably white but not weirdly white, like on some people who have too much money; he looks slim. He slides his sunglasses into the vee of his black golf shirt, shakes my hand, and leads me into the guesthouse, which is probably decorated much as it was when it was built: crystal chandeliers, a long dining table with mustard-velvet chairs, mahogany side tables with little vases.
He’s talking about Good Night, and Good Luck, the play he cowrote—based on the 2005 film he cowrote and directed—and starred in, eight shows a week for three months, from March to June. He’s still recovering.
“I was really nervous, as an actor, which I hadn’t been in a long time,” he says.
Nervous in a good way?
“Yes and no. I mean, part of it was strictly age related. As you get older—I’m sixty-four—and as you get older, it doesn’t matter how many granola bars you eat; your brain starts to lock up. I had all these long monologues, and I was afraid of blowing my lines. So every single night for one hundred performances, I would do the whole play in the dressing room before I went onstage. I was so terrified.”

Late in the play’s run, Clooney had the idea of doing it live for television, an absurd idea that was executed perfectly. He had once helped convince NBC to do a live episode of ER, and there was something thrilling about the experience. A play of this complexity, though, with him playing the mighty journalist Edward R. Murrow, whose precise and powerful monologues must be delivered flawlessly—broadcasting it live was an acting challenge on top of an acting challenge.
“But actually there’s something fun about being sixty-four years old and not being sure you’re going to get it right and risking real humiliation,” he says. “Because it’s really humiliating if you screw it up. In Italy they do this”—he holds up a tight circle with his thumb and forefinger, a variation of the American “a-okay” sign. “It means your sphincter’s tight.”
Twice already today he’s mentioned his age. He could pass for fifty. But he’s getting toward seventy, and seventy just seems too old for George Clooney to be. There’s something about the way he says it—sixty-four—that sounds like a reminder, or a confession. He’s living a hell of a life, let there be no mistake about that. A hell of a life. It’s just, sometimes you wonder if everything’s going in the right order. And there are consequences.
His father was too frail to travel to New York to see the play. “My parents are dealing with all the things you deal with with age,” he says. “They’re not thrilled about it, as you can imagine. We—none of us are, I guess. I’m not thrilled with being sixty-four.”
His eight-year-old twins clamber into the room, laughter echoing.
“Hi, Papa,” says Alexander, galloping alongside his twin sister, Ella. Alexander is dressed as a police officer.
“Hey, kiddo!” says Clooney. “Let me see what you got here.”
“We’re making a jail,” Alexander says. His little-boy voice is mostly American but carries a whisper of a British accent.
“He’s the head of police,” says his sister, Ella, in a red bathing suit.
“What are you?”
“I’m the one who brings everyone into jail,” Ella says.
Alexander is looking down at his uniform, fidgeting. “I need somewhere to hold the handcuffs,” he says.

“Okay, so what do you want to do?” his father asks.
Alexander grabs at a fold in his too-big pants. “This thing.”
“No, that’s a pleat. That’s not meant to hold the handcuffs.”
“Oh.” Alexander laughs at himself.
“You can put them in here. Like this.” Clooney clips the plastic handcuffs through a belt loop.
Ella is carrying a stick. “What’s the stick for?”
“It’s to push everyone. Then you can’t escape at the gate!”
“Well, you know, you have a lot of cousins coming here in a few minutes,” their papa says.
“And they’re all gonna be put in the world’s nicest jail where you can do whatever you want,” Ella says.
“Okay,” Clooney says. “We’re doing an interview in this room. You’re going to have to find another jail.”
“Lovely to meet you,” Ella says to me.
“Papa, can we use the downstairs?”
“Yes,” he hollers after them as they scramble off—then adds, “But be careful going down those stairs. Remember, they’re tricky.”
He exhales and smiles as quiet returns to the room. I look at him, and I guess there’s marvel in my eyes.
“Yeah, we’re very lucky,” he says, his head bobbing a little. As if to explain, he says, “You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like—they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life. I was worried about raising our kids in L. A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France—they kind of don’t give a shit about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”
The farm has a hundred acres of grapes and twelve hundred olive trees and a tractor Clooney drives the kids around on. In the spring, a fence on the farm needed painting using a protective oil to shield it from the sun. There was no handyman to paint the fence, no hired painter. Clooney went out there with Ella and Alexander and the paint and the brushes.

“And at first they’re taking these little, tiny brushstrokes, boop, boop, boop,” he says, shaking his head. “And I go, Nooo, paint the goddamn fence. And then they go crazy painting the fence and they’re covered with paint and oil and stuff.” They did the job, was the point.

When Clooney was eighteen, he cut tobacco for three dollars an hour. He’s sold insurance door-to-door, and he slept on a closet floor while he was going on acting auditions. (He did come from an entertainment family, but it’s not like everyone was rich.) He knows how to do things. Once, he and his wife, Amal, were in his 1962 Chrysler. It was cold out, and the car overheated. “I said to Amal, Give me your stockings. And she took her stockings off, and I made a fan belt out of her stockings and got us home,” he says. “And she’s like, How did you do that? And I said, Because I was fucking broke for fifteen years! I didn’t have health insurance for ten years!”
So you’re handy? I ask him.
“I’m so handy. You have no idea.”
Just yesterday, when they got here, there’s this big industrial coffee machine and it wasn’t working. “And it has this big sticker saying: Call the manufacturer. Do not take apart. I was like, Fuck that,” he says. “I took it apart, put it back together, and it works.”
As a kid, he’d be riding in the car with his mother and she’d slow the car as they drove by people’s trash by the curb. She’d see an old Singer sewing machine, fish it out of the pile, and take it home and wire it into a lamp.
And then, this morning: “The pool cover here is automatic—you hit a button. And it got stuck halfway. And you know, the kids wanted to get in the pool, and I can’t let them in because they can’t swim underneath the thing. Everybody’s upset, they’re calling to get a guy that’s going to come fix it, but he can’t be there until tomorrow and all this shit. So I take off this big block of cement that’s covering it. I crawl down and I unscrew this thing that looks like a carburetor, and I start fuckin’ around with the pieces. I see this one piece of plastic that feels like it shouldn’t be there. I got a screwdriver and I yanked it out. It was a broken piece of plastic. I pull it out, screw the thing back on. I went up and hit the button, and it worked. And I’m telling you, I felt like a king! The kids are cheering, and I’m in the pool holding up the piece of plastic”—he grins and nods, like a guy who just won a fight—“going, Yeaahhh, that’s right!”
He likes when the kids see this stuff, like he saw his mom.
“It’s important to me that they can survive,” he says.

“I’m sorry if they were interrupting,” Amal says to me, extending a slender hand and a radiant smile. She wears a big floppy sun hat and a billowy, flowery cover-up over her swimsuit. I thank her for allowing me to be here with George today, especially with her whole family coming in.
“Oh, that’s okay,” she says, shooting her husband a playful side-eye. “He’s probably grateful you’re here.”
Clooney smiles.

A tented buffet is spread out on the lawn next to a table set for a dozen or so people—the incoming cousins and aunts and uncles. Clooney plays host, lifting the metal lids off the serving trays one at a time and announcing: “Okay, lemon pasta! Chicken and . . . chicken! And these tomatoes are from the garden.”
“And lucky for you, I didn’t cook any of it,” Amal says.
“Ella, Alexander!” Clooney shouts to the kids over on the grass. “If Mama cooks, what happens?”
In unison: “We all die!”

He hunches over his plate on the coffee table, poking his fork in the air as he chews a tomato ravioli. He’s talking about his excellent head trip of a new film, Jay Kelly, in which he plays an aging movie star whose life might not be as great as he thinks it is.
Clooney’s parents are in their late eighties and early nineties, back home in Augusta, Kentucky. His dad still goes to the pub in the evening, gets some dinner, throws back a little whiskey. George and Amal are trying to figure if they can somehow get his folks here to Lake Como one last time—he thinks it would be the last time. There’s urgency there. He thinks it might have to be this year.

Home. Funny word. This place feels like a kind of home—Ella and Alexander will remember it that way, because the places we spend a few weeks in the summer occupy a disproportionate part of our memory. Los Angeles was home for a long time—now he just keeps an apartment there for work. France, that’s home now.
Clooney? He’s suspended between youth and age. His wife is forty-seven. His father’s ninety-one. His children are eight. Nick, his dad, was a TV news anchor and talk-show host in Cincinnati. Clooney thought about that as a career, but the work of it, the asking questions of others, didn’t much interest him, nor did being compared with his father, local celebrity Nick Clooney.

He worries about having kids who will forever be the children of famous parents. As he sometimes does in serious moments, he makes an unfunny point in a funny way. He says, “The only thing I feel lucky about is that I’m so much older that the idea that my son would be compared to me is pretty unlikely, because by the time he actually will have done anything, I’m gonna be gumming my bread.”
There’s a mountain here in Como, Mount Bisbino, elevation about 4,350 feet. Clooney bikes up it once every summer, “just to make sure I’m not too old.” He wears a baseball hat and trains his eyes on the road six feet in front of him.
Just get to that. Now just get to that. Now just get to that.

The screaming from outside begins when he’s mid-sentence. Clooney is saying, “And the Democrats are gonna have to get their act together—”
That’s when the screaming starts. He doesn’t notice it, or maybe he does but it doesn’t occur to him that anything might be wrong, because what possible harm or fear could pierce the unrelenting happiness of this place? Giovanni, his avuncular director of security, is around, always on duty. Clooney is here in the guesthouse, sequestered from the picnic to do the interview for a couple hours. Two empty espresso cups sit on the ornate coffee table by his knee, and he’s got one sandaled foot crossed over the opposite leg. His toes are tan—all ten, intact and uniformly caramel colored. His thin, hairless, elegant ankles too. Tan. It’s weirdly hard to take your eyes off his tan ankles and toes.
This is what he is saying:
“I do believe we get through these things, and if you think back to the times that have been really bad in the country—we’ve had them. I think ’68 was as bad as we could have had. Every city in the United States was on fire and rioting, and the capital was surrounded by armed guards to protect themselves. We killed Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy that year. There was the Tet Offensive.”
We killed college students.

The screaming starts in the distance.
“And they will. Coming out of the Iraq war and all that is what brought us Obama—brought us a really good leader. And we’re gonna need it.”
The screaming continues in the background. There are adults outside. From in here, where we’re sitting on fine upholstery under fifteen-foot ceilings, drinking Acqua Panna and getting deep into some state-of-the-world shit, it doesn’t sound like anything. Kids chasing each other.
I bring up the op-ed he wrote in The New York Times on July 10, 2024, in which he called on the sitting president, his friend Joe Biden, to end his campaign against Donald Trump. He wrote that he had hosted a massive fundraiser for Biden just three weeks before—just a little over four months before the election—and that Biden looked as bewildered as the old man America had seen during a disastrous televised debate. There’s a solid argument that if he doesn’t write that editorial, Biden doesn’t drop out of the race.
Because the op-ed was apparently effective, I ask him, does he wonder whether Democrats might call on him to write another one the next time there’s some intraparty mess that needs a voice to rise above feckless leadership?
He smiles the way people smile at something that isn’t funny, grabs his ankle, and shakes his head.
“I don’t think so,” he says. “I think people have heard enough from me. I wasn’t doing it to, you know—I was doing it because I’d been a personal witness to things, and I also, quite honestly—”
Just then, Ella runs through the door and scampers toward her father, her little bare feet slapping the mosaic tile floor.
“Papa!” she says, not yelling but grave.
“Yeah?”
“Alexander got stung by a bee.”
And the second she says it, all you can hear is the screaming.
Clooney leaps from his chair and runs toward the door, leaving his sunglasses and phone on the table. His face tightens, and under his breath he says, “Shit.”

Clooney is usually the doctor of the family, even when Amal is not upstairs on a Zoom with Microsoft, which she is at the moment. Just as he can jury-rig a fan belt out of a pair of stockings, he’s pretty good at transforming into a field medic. He sat with Alexander, cradling him in his arms on one of the chairs by the pool. He pulled out the stinger, and his fingers grew cold from holding ice to his son’s throbbing foot.
While filming Syriana in 2005, Clooney suffered two small tears in his spine, and spinal fluid began leaking out, causing intense headaches and other symptoms. The pain was brutal. Doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles performed a twelve-hour surgery later that year, on Christmas Eve.
He was in the hospital for days afterward. He remembers roaming the halls holding a small artificial Christmas tree, stopping to talk for several hours about God knows what to a man who was in a coma.
The pain persisted. His whole head, his neck, his back, everything getting squeezed by a pipe wrench. He took painkillers for five years before a pain-management specialist told him he couldn’t live this way—something Clooney already knew to be true. But he couldn’t live with the pain either.

Here’s what the specialist told him: You have to recalibrate what you think of as pain. Make a total adjustment. If you were born feeling the way you feel right now, you wouldn’t know you were in pain, right? So, in fact, the pain you’re enduring is a form of mourning how you used to feel. If you can teach your brain a new, higher pain threshold, little by little, you won’t notice the pain, and you won’t need the medication.

But he’s distracted by a prehistoric-looking horsefly the size of a small bird buzzing around the room. The interview was supposed to end an hour and fifteen minutes ago, and I say, “By the way, I know you have to go—”
“Nah, it’s fine,” he says, his eyes following the fly.
The hours of the day are piling up, and Clooney is closer to midnight than dawn.
He stands.
“I’m getting his ass.”
The fly has disappeared into the tall drapes on one of the windows. Clooney closes in. He’s got it trapped.
“I’ve got the right shoe for this.”
He removes one of his sandals, crouches a little, as if to sneak up on it, and sidesteps slowly toward the window. He says in a low whisper, “So this is a horsefly, and these motherfuckers, they—”
SMACK!
“Missed him.”
The fly is buzzing around loudly, lost in the curtain but trying—it seems—to come after Clooney.
“Yeah!” he shouts at it. “Get mad!”
SMACK!
He stands over the twitching carcass like a guy in an old western.
“Sorry, dude.”
He smacks it again.

“So Obama and I both play basketball a lot, right?” he picks up. “And I go, Are you still playing basketball? And he goes, I quit three years ago. And I go, I quit three years ago. And I was like, If you’d asked me four years ago if I would ever quit, I’d have told you: Never! Ne-ver will I quit.”
He’ll shoot around still. At the kids’ elementary school in France, there was a family day and they had a basketball thing, “six on six, full court, where everybody loses a tooth.” Clooney was out there the whole time while the other “young dads,” some of them twenty and thirty years younger than him, took breathers.

In 2022 he was directing The Boys in the Boat, which featured a bunch of very tall, very athletic young men. Most were British, “so they don’t play basketball,” he says. Clooney had a hoop outside his trailer and liked to shoot around. “And the Brits were all like”—he mimes someone heaving up a terrible, awkward basketball shot. But these guys were all six-five, six-six, and could dunk.
“And I was like, I was like, Give me that fuckin’ ball,” he says. “Let me show you how to jam it. Because I used to dunk, and I hadn’t tried it in fifteen years. I can palm a basketball; I have big hands. I took the ball, I took a dribble, I took a step. I went up to dunk like this.” He jumps.
“I didn’t hit the net! And I fell backwards on my ass. In the gravel.”
He slumps back into his chair, defeated, says, “I think . . . I think—and maybe there’s some research on this—I think loss of vertical jump might be a real sign of aging.”
Clooney cracks his ankles.

“. . . how things have changed so much. My wife and I talk about what movies to watch, and we’re in a constant battle because I want it to be some dark documentary or something, and she wants it to be, you know, the next Bridget Jones, or Sex and the City—I’ve seen all of those. By the way, she falls asleep and I end up watching. But it’s always this battle. Recently I said, There aren’t any great comedies out right now, let’s watch some older ones. She goes, What was the biggest comedy when you were young? I said, Well, there was no equal to Animal House. I think it actually made the most money. Huge. She says, Well, let’s watch it. I go, I don’t know if it’s going to hold up. Like, the first scene, a thirteen-year-old girl passes out and the devil pops up on the guy’s shoulder and says, ‘Fuck her brains out!’ And my wife’s looking at me like, Are you kidding me? And I’m like, Oh my God, this is terrible! I mean, it’s just crazy how things . . .”

Jay Kelly is directed by Noah Baumbach, who wrote the script with Emily Mortimer. Baumbach is known for creating scenes that make you laugh awkwardly at the characters, but then those awkwardly funny scenes accumulate into a painful story that makes you rethink every choice you’ve ever made. In this film, Clooney is as good as he’s ever been, maybe the best he’s ever been.

He tells me anyone can do a decent job acting if the script is great, even me, which of course is not true. As Jay Kelly’s heart breaks, a little at a time, Clooney’s performance breaks our own.

“Are you sure you don’t need to . . . ?” I ask him, as we are now entering hour six of a two-hour interview, and there is the matter of Amal’s entire extended family being here.

But Clooney’s laughing about the shit he and his sister and his cousins used to do as kids back in Kentucky, because Jay Kelly is the kind of movie that makes you think about that stuff. (Kelly is even from Kentucky, though Clooney says that was true even before the script came to him.)
Clooney’s mom’s dad drove the kids to and from the tobacco fields in an old Ford pickup, and on the way home in the afternoons—on the freeway—George and his sister and their cousin Jamie would sit on the lowered tailgate, wrap their arms through the chains that held it up and lock arms with one another, and bounce their feet along the pavement as their grandfather sped along at sixty miles per hour.
“If you drove by somebody now doing that, you’d call child services! And that guy would go to jail,” he says. “But then it was just like, ‘Wail, ah guess ah’l jus’ dangle muh feet off this here truck.’ And I’m not saying that those times were better, by any means.”
Although it kind of sounds as if he is saying that—and the times were certainly fun, right?

[size=31]“I want there to be this thing in their chest that says, you know, ‘This would make Papa proud.’ ”[/size]

“Oh, dude. How we survived all the dumbass things we did—making bombs. We strapped together a bunch of M-80’s, which is basically a stick of dynamite. I had a fake front tooth because we used to do a game where one kid would put on a Cincinnati Bengals football helmet, stick paper cups in the ear holes, and put on a pair of glasses. And then”—he makes a diagram with the espresso spoons—“this is an alleyway. We would all stand here with our BB guns like this. And the kid on the bike would yell, ‘Pull!’ like we’re skeet shooting, and he’d ride through and we’d all go bam-bam-bam shooting BBs at him. That’s how stupid we were. I mean, dear God.”
A thousand years ago, that stuff. Everything gets harder as the years pile up, including drinking—or, rather, recovering from drinking, when hangovers seem to get harder every year, the worst kind of reminder of our mortality. For the six months he was rehearsing and performing Good Night, and Good Luck, Clooney barely had a sip of alcohol—maybe a glass of wine after the Sunday matinee, because there wasn’t another performance until Tuesday night. Alcohol affects your voice and your sleep, and he treated it like being an athlete. Good Night, and Good Luck was nominated for five Tony Awards, including best leading actor for Clooney. The night of the awards (he didn’t win), there was a party after.

“I got blasted,” he says. “Barely-walking drunk, you know? Came home with Amal, and I was just laughing. We’re lying in bed, and I go, Well, I caught up for all my abstinence in one night. I was sick all day the next day; it was hysterical. I was like high school drunk. Like dumbass drunk.”

I’ve given up on saying things like “I’ve taken up too much of your time,” because he keeps telling wonderful stories and there’s a cool breeze coming in off the lake and I’m at George Clooney’s house in fucking Italy and he’ll let me know when he’s good.
“I mean, Harrison and I have a hysterical thing—”
He’s talking about the fact that, like anyone, he meets a lot of people through work, and most of them are kind and generous and people you actually like to be around and, yes, he is actually good friends with some of the famous people he’s worked with. Brad, Matt, those guys. Lots of people over the years. Laura Dern, who’s in Jay Kelly, with whom he hadn’t worked since they did a movie called Grizzly 2: Revenge in 1983. Adam Sandler, who plays his manager in Jay Kelly—in fact, when Sandler and Jen Aniston were filming one of their murder-mystery movies by Lake Como a few years ago, they came over for dinner. Julia, of course—funny story about Ticket to Paradise, a very solid romantic comedy from 2022: As highly paid A-list actors, they took a small fee up front in exchange for points on the back end. The movie was a surprise hit, earning something like $190 million. He and Julia did well on that one.

So anyway, Clooney knew Harrison Ford a little bit, and he and Amal ran into him at a birthday party. “I’d had this weird fucking dream where I came into the house, and there was a Jacuzzi in the middle of the kitchen, and Amal was in the Jacuzzi with Harrison Ford. And then they get out and I’m like, What are you doing, Harrison? And he says, [grumbly Ford voice] Oh, you know. And then they get in the car, and they sit in the front, so I had to sit in the back. Like I’m the kid. And I’m saying, This is my wife! And Amal’s going, Oh, relax will you? And he’s like, [grumble] Oh, just shut up. That dream had happened, like, a week before the party. I don’t often dream about Harrison Ford. I said to him, I had a dream about you, motherfucker. I told him the dream, and he goes: [deep voice] This happens to me all the time. In his grumpy, grumpy way. He just killed me. And, you know, to me he’s Indiana Jones and Han Solo! I mean, come on!”
The little stories that make up a life.

He was watching a show recently, one of those true-crime things about people who get killed, and this one was about an actor who went to Hollywood to try to make it and got mixed up with the wrong people. Clooney’s takeaway was how hard it is not only to be successful in his line of work but to hold on to it.
He figures he’s lucky he broke late. He was thirty-three when he started on ER and not paparazzi-famous for another few years. “If you look at all the cats that I’ve been . . . sort of in the running with,” he says. He is speaking slowly now, not telling a story, not messing around. He’s delivering each word. It almost seems as if he’s telling this part to himself. “You have to dance between the raindrops of trying not to get caught in anything scandalous. It’s hard to not make a mistake that could really—not ruin your career but certainly stall it. You have to be paying attention. It’s funny that way.”
I start to say, “It is kind of amazing that you haven’t—”
He cuts me off with a little laugh. “I think probably, again, because I was older, I’d sort of done all my dumb things when nobody knew who I was. I would have been shooting crack out of my forehead if I’d hit when I was twenty-one.”

Clooney had been striving for a lot of years before the ER break—a Golden Girls episode, an arc on The Facts of Life, the long-haired role of a cop going undercover as a biker on something called Sunset Beat. These are funny to look back on now because now he’s George Clooney. But at the time, he was sweating blood for these parts. He had no intention of crawling back to Augusta, Kentucky, to be Nick Clooney’s kid for the rest of his life.
Los Angeles in the 1980s was like many places in the 1980s. “Eighty-two, I tried—I did blow and stuff. I used to make jokes about how I did too many drugs, but the truth is, it was never a big issue for me at all. And look, there was an episode of Taxi where they’re all doing blow. At the time, it was like, No, this is not like heroin. It’s not addictive. But then it was like, Oh, well, it’s actually pretty fucking bad. Plus, it was all cut with mannitol. The baby laxative. Everybody would do a line and then take a shit.”
He was always more of a booze guy, if anything. Look, man. Yeah, he’s George Clooney. Looks great in a tux, won two Oscars, married to one of the preeminent human-rights lawyers of her generation. But if you think because he’s a rich, great-looking actor he hasn’t had some dark shit that could rival your darkest shit any day of the week, you haven’t thought things through. So yeah, sometimes he’s been a booze guy: “I’ve had periods where, I wouldn’t say it was a problem—I never woke up and drank or anything. But I’d have runs where I’d get pretty toasty every night.”

Grass? Funny story about grass.
About fifteen years ago he and a bunch of friends made pot brownies and did the thing where you watch The Wizard of Oz while listening to Dark Side of the Moon and it syncs up trippily, “and we were fucked. I literal—I think all of us—there was like twenty of us in the screening room, and the movie ended, and we sat there without speaking for, like, hours. Hours! Like the sun was coming up and we’re—it’s just not my drug.”
He lives pretty clean these days. He works out every day. He recently bought a workout system called Katalyst, a vest and leg bands that send electrical charges to the muscles, creating resistance, so you feel like you’re lifting weight. “Part of getting old is you can’t build muscle. Your body won’t do it. And this thing’s made me so strong. My arms are twice the size they’ve ever been. It’s crazy,” he says. And every year, he goes in for one of those full-body scans and workups that look for everything.
The kids are starting to ask questions about God and death and all that. Alexander tells him he’s old, not in a teasing way but with fear in his voice. In these moments, Clooney touches his son’s chest and tells him never to say that his dad’s not around anymore, because he’ll always be in Alexander’s chest. He uses that word—in his chest. “That’s the legacy that I want,” Clooney tells me, his voice quiet. “I want there to be this thing in their chest that says, ‘Papa.’ You know, ‘This would make Papa proud.’ ”
Clooney’s father was too old to travel to New York to see Good Night, and Good Luck—which was part of the reason Clooney wanted to do it live on CNN. Nick had some family over and they watched it. At the end, when Clooney delivered Murrow’s closing monologue and the screen went to black, his father stood up, right there in the living room, and saluted the TV.

Ella pads into the room, appearing through the now-darkened doorway. The door has remained open all day.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Mama wanted you to—Mama wanted to know if you want anything.”
Clooney smiles, knowing Amal has sent their daughter as an emissary.
“No, thank you, sweetheart. We’ll be done in a second. Tell Mom I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

Ella spins on her heel and skips away.
Clooney calls after her: “How’s Alexander’s foot?”
“He’s better. He doesn’t need the ice anymore.”
“Okay, good.”
As she disappears out the door: “He can walk!” Her fairy voice sings out from the night. “He can use both legs!”
In seven hours Clooney has mentioned his age eleven times. He’s not too happy about being sixty-four. “We—none of us are, I guess.” None of us can help but wonder if we’re doing it right, or at least more right than wrong. All of it. He wonders sometimes whether the hotel clerk could have played shortstop for the Yankees if someone had paid a little attention to him growing up. Hey, Clooney’s happy, no question about that. Nothing to complain about. For the longest time he didn’t think he wanted kids, and now that he has them he wonders if he’s too old, but then again if he’d had them way back then, he might not have had the career he’s had, probably wouldn’t have bought this house, wouldn’t have met Amal, might live closer to his parents and his sister—
But again, nothing to complain about. It’s just—
“Oh shit, it’s nine o’clock. I gotta go. I’m sorry.” He steps from the house out onto the darkening lawn. Amal and her family are sitting outside at a table set for dinner, under twinkly lights, waiting for him.

During a conversation with Esquire, the Jay Kelly star, 64, shared a glimpse into his life living in France with his wife Amal Clooney and their twins Alexander and Ella, 8. George told the outlet that he's "very lucky" to be able to raise his children on a farm away from the Hollywood spotlight.
“You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it," he explained. "But now, for them, it’s like—they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life."
"I was worried about raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life," he added. "France—they kind of don’t give a s--- about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

Amal wore an Atelier Versace gown designed by Dario Vitale. The brown off-the-shoulder ruched look featured intricate pleats at her waistline. Her sophisticated ensemble included a small gold clutch, gold rings and gold dangle drop earrings.
The attorney's long brown hair was styled in curls that cascaded down her shoulders. Her makeup aligned with her neutral and gold ensemble, with a shimmery brown eye, bronzed blush and nude lip gloss.
Meanwhile, the Oscar winner coordinated with a classic Old Hollywood look, sporting a sleek black tuxedo with black leather dress shoes.

The pair's foundation established the annual event “to shine a protective spotlight on brave individuals and groups from around the globe who, at great personal risk, have devoted their lives to fighting for justice,” per the official site.
The Albies are named after the anti-apartheid hero Justice Albie Sachs, who received a Lifetime Achievement in Pursuit of Justice award at the inaugural ceremony in 2022.
The 2025 honorees include Gambian women's and girls’ rights activist Fatou Baldeh, Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora, American newspaper editor Marty Baron, philanthropist Melinda French Gates and lifetime achievement recipient Darren Walker.

The couple’s London appearance comes days after they walked the red carpet at the New York Film Festival premiere of Jay Kelly on Monday, Sept. 29.
At that event, Amal went flirty in a red velvet minidress from Oscar de la Renta's fall/winter 2025 ready-to-wear collection. The deep red velvet showcased her toned legs, arms and shoulders with a strapless cut with subtle ruching around the bust. The skirt of the dress was completely covered in three-dimensional, red poppy flowers that bloomed outward to mimic real petals.

George Clooney and his wife Amal stepped out in style at the Venice Film Festival.
The 64-year-old actor and lawyer, 47, walked the carpet together on Thursday, Aug. 28, ahead of the premiere of his film, Jay Kelly.
Amal lit up the carpet in a body-hugging fuchsia minidress fitted with a billowing train. She accessorized with gold Aquazzura Forever More Sandal 105 heels and a gold clutch. Her long hair was worn down in a soft wave, and it blew in the Italian wind (along with her train!).
George kept it classic in a black tux with a white button-down shirt and black bow tie. He escorted his wife along the carpet proudly and posed for photos with her while holding her arm.

Prior to the red carpet, George bowed out of a few appearances at the Venice Film Festival, including the press conference earlier in the day on Aug. 28.
At the press conference, Noah Baumbach, director of Jay Kelly, addressed reporters as to why the actor was not in attendance, after the moderator said he wouldn't be there.
"As you may know, George Clooney is not gonna be here because he has a bad sinus infection. We think he should be on the red carpet tonight, but he is very sorry he cannot be with us," the moderator said, to which Baumbach, 55, then quipped, "Even movie stars get sick."

The two last stepped out for a red carpet date night at The King's Trust Awards in London on June 26. The Good Night, and Good Luck actor spruced up for the event in a navy suit with a crisp white shirt and popped collar, while Amal also went down the monochromatic route in a white column halter dress featuring a metal embellishment.
She showed a hint of skin at her legs, thanks to two daring slits. Upon arrival at the event, the lawyer also wore oversize sunglasses to shield her eyes from the sun.

Their red carpet looks weren’t a one-off — the Clooneys have made a habit of turning every outing into a style moment. In July, they were spotted on a date night in Lake Como, Italy, with Amal sporting a sparkly one-shoulder dress that hugged her figure with matching strappy heels, while the actor wore a dapper navy blue suit jacket and matching trousers.
Amal has also shone brightly on her own, previously attending the Cannes Film Festival solo in a black strapless gown that was not only eye-catching but bold enough to break the festival's new dress codes. Clooney, 64, wasn't present for a press junket promoting Jay Kelly, his new film directed by Noah Baumbach, and skipped a dinner with cast mates, including Adam Sandler and Laura Dern. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news.
The actor was allegedly seen boarding a boat to leave the Hotel Excelsior at approximately 4 p.m. local time on his way home to rest for the day.
"Unfortunately, George has a sinus infection and, under doctor’s orders, he has had to scale back his activities today," a Clooney rep told PEOPLE.

Clooney also missed the official press conference for the Netflix film on Thursday, Aug. 28.
“As you may know, George Clooney is not going to be here because he has a bad sinus infection," the press conference's moderator said. "We really hope, and I think he should be on the red carpet tonight. But he is very sorry he cannot be with us.”
Director Noah Baumbach jokingly chimed in, adding, “Even movie stars get sick.”

George Clooney isn't concerned with people who question his range as an actor.
The actor, 64, responded to critics who think he only plays himself in movies in an interview with Vanity Fair published on Monday, Aug. 4.
"Do people say that I only play myself? I don’t give a s---," Clooney said. "There aren’t that many guys in my age group that are allowed to do both broad comedies like O Brother [Where Art Thou?] and then do Michael Clayton or Syriana. So if that means I’m playing myself all the time, I don’t give a s---."

The Oscar winner then quoted his upcoming movie Jay Kelly, in which he plays a famous actor reflecting on his life while traveling through Europe. "Have you ever tried playing yourself? It’s hard to do," he said.
Looking back on his own career, Clooney told the outlet, "I’ve been the beneficiary of having my career not be massively successful in lots of different directions."
He continued, "I didn’t really get successful, in the kind of success that can be blinding, until I was 33 years old. I’d been working for 12 years at that point. I had a real understanding of how fleeting all of it is and how little it has to do with you, quite honestly."

In 2023, Quentin Tarantino claimed Clooney was no longer a movie star during a conversation with Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye. "Well, it’s been a long while since I think George Clooney has drawn anybody to an audience," the director said of the Ticket to Paradise actor.

Clooney's long career includes movies From Dusk till Dawn, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Ocean's Eleven and Gravity, and an iconic role on in the NBC's '90s hit ER. He won Oscar Awards for his respective performances in Syriana and Argo.

A Tennesee high school student who graduated at the top of his class earned millions for his college education, all while enduring a family tragedy.
Earlier this month, 17-year-old Tupac Mosley graduated from Raleigh Egypt High School in Memphis with a whopping $3 million in scholarships, FOX 13reported. While the monetary total is astonishing, it’s even more remarkable that Mosley was able to earn the funds while keeping a 4.3 GPA and being homeless.
“When I heard that I got $3 million, I was more than elated and excited and astonished that it was that much,” he told the outlet.
Mosley, who was the school’s valedictorian, explained that his family has struggled since the death of his father this year. After his passing, they had trouble paying bills and rent and were evicted from their home. A permanent living situation soon seemed out of reach, and Mosley began to worry about his goal of attending college.
“After my father passed, [my family] fell behind on bills and we ended up getting evicted from our home Feb. 21 of this year,” Mosley told FOX 13. “So, we went to different homes.”
During a speech at his graduation ceremony, Mosley thanked the nonprofit For the Kingdom, which helps urban youth “get away from city life but not from the city” through camps and workshops, their website says.
Mosley explained that For the Kingdom’s director gave his family a place to stay at the campgrounds, which, in turn, kept his dreams of attending college alive, according to ABC 7.

I just returned from a congress of the protestant church in Germany. About 100,000 people met for five days to pray, discuss, sing and celebrate.

Last night, I was at a discussion about courage with Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese in Washington D.C.. She talked about the outcome of her sermon at the church service after Trump's inaugaration. It was so inspiring and impressive for the thousands of people who wanted to listen to her, I'm still touched by her words.

The whole congress was so interesting, but listening to this lady was my highlight.
